A good option might be to convert your gif to the .webm format using https://gfycat.com/ - It'll allow you to keep the high quality but still keep the filesize down. (though i don't know if this forum works with webm files as attachments.)
Thanks Phanues for the suggestion and site. I'll look that up as I work on the animation.
