Wip Navigating a New England Harbor

A friend lives in Marblehead, he's taken my family and I to this cove. I'll be adding a good amount of trees/forest and some houses, along with the fort, but the land forms are pretty much in place. Will make it a more period piece, not recent. Plenty more to do.Click image for larger version.

Really nice start snodsy! Not really much to say other than the land and shading is looking awesome!

Only thing I don't like at the moment is the way that the place name is right in the middle of the quote.

Very nice! I agree with GLS about the place name in the quote... perhaps if you fade that one so it is less distinct? Otherwise, great piece.

Oh wow, nice start! I love the lighthouse and the maritime elements.

Did you draw that ship? My goodness! Thomrey's right. It looks pretty well finished to me.

How long did it take you to get it to this stage?

Thanks guys, no the ship and lighthouse are photos manipulated, may try to illustrate the boat. Probably about 6 hours so far, 1 hour sketch-5 hours in Photoshop. Yeah, not sure of the Quote and Title placement yet, agree with you on the overlap.

Looks great snodsy! The underwater shading is perfect and the map could already be a finished piece as far as I'm concerned. Ant wait to see what it looks like when it is finished.

Here's an update, more trees, houses, boats, etc. Really didn't like the rhumb lines on the land, work better in sea only. Critiques welcome.

I agree about the rhumb lines. I think they look better in areas where there is little else to look at - like the sea. Now that you've started adding more detail to the land they just wouldn't look right.

The colours are all very tightly controlled towards grey. Are you intending to keep it that way? It gives the land a kind of foreboding feel to it, but maybe that was your intention?

I've only just noticed the surf, even though it was there all the time! LOL! nice work Snodsy
