Are you going to shade this map - like the ones in your album?

I was planning on ageing the paper, so shading wouldn't work, I am considering not ageing it, but that all depends on how the map unfolds.

Here is the map so far, there is only a little left for me to do now. However, the question that has been nagging me for awhile can't be put off anymore: Should I shade it, or should I age it? Hope you like it so far!

Note: The map was too big for my scanner, there is a frame I drew, and a little more to the map, but you can't see it.

Hey that's looking really good now

As to whether you should shade or age - that's very much up to you.

This is just a crazy idea, but how about printing two very much reduced size copies of your map on similar paper to the paper you have drawn it on, and trying both - like testers?

Well, that doesn't sound like too much of a crazy idea, especially since (just for testing) I could age one with GIMP and not even have to print it to see how it looks.

I didn't realise you were also using GIMP

You could even try electronically shading the aged version if you have a tablet. If not then maybe just some simple tonal shading done with a very fuzzy edged brush on a layer set to overlay - but you would have to age the paper first to give the overlay something to pick up on.

    Up to you

Alright, this is what it would generally look like if I were to age it:

However, if I were to age it I don't think I'd edit it after, to me after doing a map entirely by hand it would ruin the effect to then edit it with a computer. I thought about also making a shaded example, but it would not have the same pencil effect on the computer, but I know pretty much how it'll look after shading by referring to my other shaded maps. I'll think on which to do and I'll probably have the map done tomorrow. Thank you!

EDIT: If I age it, I think I'll only shade the coasts (by pencil) like in my Britain Map.

I personally like it just fine in B&W. I'd go for something with less yellow if you're going to put it on a parchment-y background.

Looking good! The resolution of the paper texture is not so good and therefore not doing justice to your map, imho.
