Thread: A random port city

    Default A random port city

    A new map I drew of a random port city. I don't know where I'm going with it, but it is fun to make.
    The lining isn't finished yet, then will come the colorization I guess. I have to think about the important buildings and places in the meanwhile...

    This does look really good. Your city layout looks very realistic - I'm imagining a city in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution.

    I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it next.

    Thanks people

    I think I will integrate this city in my RPG campaign univers, but I'm not sure it would be this realistic because it's a medieval fantasy world and I assume that the straight roads don't fit it well.
    However it would be a well organized city, rich and prosperous, belonging to a powerfull kingdom... so I hope at the end it will be believable ^^

    Straight roads were possible in medieval times (although they weren't very common, and they might not have been perfectly straight). Pope Sixtus V (1500s) attempted to rebuild Rome with straight roads.

    I think the mistake that many people make when thinking about medieval cities is to believe that the streets are never straight. A more effective way to indicate medieval streets, I think, is not by making the roads less straight but making them less even in their width: in some places they might be very wide, in others very narrow, all on the same street.

    Wingshaw's pointed out soemthing I never thought of. changing the width of the streets. interssting!
