Thread: Born Free safari maps 1 [commission]

Map Born Free safari maps 1 [commission]

Back in 2015 I did a series of maps for the well reviewed photo safari company, Born Free.
The focus was predominantly the parks in each country, but there was also a desire for the feel I was creating in my fantasy maps as well.

The original design brief stated watercolor and gave a very simple style.
But, as often happens, clients change their minds. Thus the style changed.
Thus the style became somewhat more complicated.
I came up with a simplified way of rendering the terrain so it would be consistent across the series.
In total, it was six maps. Kenya was the first and set the tone.
Tanzania followed that map and fully solidified the style.
I put them together here for the purpose of brevity on other sites, but I'll use the single image here too.

    Those are beautiful John

I love the colours, the delicate tracery of the line work, and most of all - the way you have fit that gorgeous little lion cameo into the outline of Africa.

    Excellent illustration!

Awesome work! I've been to Serengeti, Ngorogoro and Tarangire national parks and kilimanjaro. It's nice to see how small the mountains really are when illustrated on a real world map.
"That sounds... incredibly complicated, but there's no doubt the result is fantastic." /Diamond

Boooooooorn freeeee, as free as my rep flows...

Well, I can't rep you yet, but those are FANTASTIC, J. It's really interesting to see just how much of each country is dedicated to preserves; I didn't realize it was quite that much.

Absolutely gorgeous. The style is incredible, and I love how you so wonderfully mix the real world with a fantasy style. Beautiful.

The discreet touches of green show a land that really seems to be heaven on earth. You did justice to what you were showing. And kudos for the lion !

    Beautiful work as always!
I love how you manage to keep your maps simple (as in not too busy) and very compelling to look at at the same time!

EDIT: I can't rep you now so I'll come back later

Nicely done! Looks like they could have been plucked out of a copy of National Geographic or something similar.
