Map Dwarven City of Kuglutuk + Vault Blueprints

My completed map of Kuglutuk, a dwarven city built into a mountain, as well as a close-up of its market districts and blueprints to the Chief’s stronghold and vault. The city map’s different levels (floors and walls) and the entirety of the stronghold/vault were drawn by hand (pencil and paper), then converted to digital. I drew all of the various buildings and other doo-dads on the city map in Photoshop using a Wacom Intuous tablet. For the close-up of the market district, I drew the temple cut-out but not all of the inside scenes. For the vault and stronghold, I thought it would be fun to make something that looks like actual blueprints. The font I used is Breathe Fire, available at dafont.com.

    WIP thread is here.

Kuglutuk was once a silver mine, but as the dwarves mined deeper and deeper, they realized the excavated caverns would make a perfect city. Visitors enter through a set of enormous iron doors that lead into the mountain and are immediately dazzled by the intricate carvings in all of the walls, with gorgeous inlays of gold, silver, and gems. The city is lit by bioluminescent fungi and Elven Glow imported from the Free City of Alexia, across the mountains. Visitors need a dwarven escort to explore beyond the Academy and market districts, but those districts offer nearly anything a visitor (or local) could want. The Small Market, with its large number of gypsy tents, sells food and goods that are ready to take. The Central Market offers inns and taverns in addition to goods, both ready to purchase and bespoke. The Academy teaches mining, masonry, and all types of smithing and has a significant library. The Chieftain’s District houses dwarven nobles and wealthy merchants, as well as the Chief’s Stronghold & Vault, which houses important and/or expensive items from around the realm. The Stronghold serves as Kuglutuk’s military command center, whereas civilian operations are handled in the Administrative District. The Mage District is housed deep within the mountain, just above the active mines, in the hopes that powerful mages will fight off any deep-dwelling monsters.

I love the ideas and approach to this very much. Mapping a 3d space which has a heavily vertical component presents many challenges and I think you came up with some great solutions. Also I like the vaults since they remind me so much of Dwarf Fortress games, and they are the exact kind of well done vault I liked to see.

Really nice work - can't rep you again yet though! As Falconius said, you had some great and innovative answers as to how to map something like this. Well done!

Wow, thank you all for the awesome compliments! I had a lot of fun mapping the dungeon. Thankfully I got well into the city map before I realized how much effort was required. I wound up printing out both in large format for my D&D game. The city map was a big hit and I expect the PCs will attempt to storm the vault during out next game.

Well done, and I bet the players/PCs went nuts over that city map. If they didn't, I'd start to question just what kind of RPers they really are.

Thank you! Yes, the players went bonkers over the map; I finally had to nudge them back to the game so we could make some progress. I had it printed at 40 inches wide and laminated for use with dry erase markers, so the players can make notes about where they've been and what they've done. I'm looking forward to using it again at the next game. And debuting the blueprints with the secret doors showing (they have the non-secret blueprints already and are now aware that secret ones exist).

Great set of maps ! And quite unusual to see mayan pyramids associated to dwarves.
