July Challenge: The Great Eye

Hey everyone!

I missed the previous dragon challenge! Maybe it was a Light Challenge and that's why. But anyway! Here I be, ready to map.

Once, many years ago, these islands had a different name. Then the earth shook and the sea cast itself at the coasts, and from the chaos an Eye remained on the once peaceful archipelago. The Great Eye of the Dragon Spine Isles. Naturally many tales started filling the taverns of creatures never before seen that now dwell in the many dark corners of these seas. But none so bone chilling than the tales of Mad Men's Run, ones of colossal flying beasts at the now forgotten ruins on those islands, the ones at edge of the terrifying Great Eye that never stops its roaring swirl. Some say there are captains that make the run. Yet, none would boast it out loud, in fear of being branded a liar. But, still those rumors make its roots.

This is the stuff I worked on today, mostly making stuff pop, the maelstrom and the colors I did several days ago. The first post really just shows a bit of the process. But now, there are still several islands to touch up and then all the names. But so far so good.

This is looking really good. The shadows on the whirlpool must have taken a while to create.
I almost mistook the dark patch of sea on the mid-top right for some giant underwater creature, which I think fits in with your backstory here, even if unintentional!

Hehe, that's such a cool observation! I like the idea also, even if it is unintentional.
And I'm glad you like the map. Though, thinking about it now. It's not really that the whirlpool took a while, mayhaps a day or so, the shadows were probably the easier part, BUT I will say, the shadows on the points of the arms were quite tricky to blend. The hard part about it was getting the highlights right and to blend them to look more natural. Although, I've not done many maelstroms, so with practice it will definitely not be too difficult to pull of in a few hours. It's all about the highlights and the shadows.

Totally digging this, it has such character already. Can't wait to see what you do with it, Omri.

Hope you all are well.
Today, I finished most of what I wanted to do with the islands, and I did the title. Process? Still mainly playing with highlights and shadows to get stuff to pop that way.

Among other things, I got the first set of names down. Each encompassing an island chain mainly. I am still a bit up in the air about the color for the text, but for now I'll leave it.
