ooh, arcology style! i love it!

There was a book i read awhile back, can't remember the title, but on the planet that got settled, star sapphires had formed geologically, everywhere. So much so that was the primary building material for entire cities (like limestone, granite, etc here back when we used actual stone instead of concrete, lol). Could be the same thing on this planet - it has such a high gold concentration that it's valueless in terms of currency, and gets used for everyday industrial purposes

I find myself tempted not to make a typical looking map. But I woudn't find myself again wondering if it's a map or not. :S Tough call..

I don't see why that can't be a map, all it would need would be some basic labeling as to what things are.

Yeah, Maybe It will be ok if I just label it correctly. It could be a map for new mineworkers introducing the different facilities of the area etc.

Could be underwater as well as on another planet.

I would try moving the view somewhere between the first and second pics that you recently showed, thus retaining that unique and interesting look without losing alot of detail from above or making it seem as if it is not a map. Though i do like both of those as well, quite interesting.
