Not that you need a real answer, as yours is more a rhetorical question and comment, however, just to be thorough, consider this...
You're an author, correct? Consider "these kind of games" as a novel being played live, where the game master is the author or story teller and the characters within the story are being played out by those participating players. Since the storyteller can't force the characters in doing things, he/she is merely guiding them through the plotline, where as the characters make their own decisions based on their available skills at overcoming obstacles, people, monsters, situations provided in the story.
There are all kinds of complex rule mechanics, use of dice to determine random outcomes which is the physical guide that sets limitations or permits allowances based on an individual characters skillsets.
To an author's point of view, an RPG game is your book being played live and the possible outcomes may differ based on what the characters do to best follow the plotline and achieve success. RPGs are story-telling games.
This might not interest your participation in one, but may help you understand what all us gamers pursue in playing them.
Does that help?

Well it's not that I don't understand the basic premise as you describe it, not understanding the mechanics involved would be a more accurate way of putting it. I know dice are involved and a GM and others who follow various maps and doodads.
I hope you didn't take my comment as meaning, I cannot understand why people would play these? Because I certainly didn't mean that.

I didn't think that at all, and I did say I was answering a rhetorical question. No offense taken or implied. I was just matter-of-factly describing the basic premise for those that truly don't understand the Gamer's Purpose.
After all, many Game Masters are really frustrated writers less capable of creating novels, so we satisfy the creative writing urge by developing home brew games, settings and adventures. Game masters and authors have some things in common.

Don't worry, there are more systems out there than most people could really properly know.
Dice are there to make it an experience that is less predictable than a pre-written script. I could go into my own elaborate thoughts but it's to add risk, challenge and uncertainty into the abilities of the fictional characters.
