The theme for Sept/Oct was 'Map a Legendary Location'. Bogie wrote...
For this months challenge I want you to map a Location from the Great Legends. Maybe do the cave were Hercules fights the great lion, Mount Olympus where Zeus lives, Baba Yaga's Hut, King Arthur's Camelot, The Fountain of Youth, Xanadu, Dracula's Castle, Frankenstein's Laboratory, Lost city of Atlantis, Lots & lots of opportunities.
We had a few locations inspired by literary works. 7Sided created a dungeon map of Dracula's Castle and Fol2dol risked waking the Old Ones with "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming". Poison went for classic Greek mythology with a mosaic-style map of "The Minotaur's Lair". Ladiestorm went for a modern superhero story with "Wonder Woman's Themiscyra". Finally, Mixerbach created a map based on the fabled isle of Hy-Brasil off the coast of Ireland.
We had some complaints around voting time. Apparently it was too hard to choose and quite a few Guild members wanted to vote for every single map. The voting quandary perhaps explains our rather unusual result. We didn't have one winner this month. Nor did we have two, as was the case in the Aug/Sept Lite Challenge. Nope, this month we had a three-way tie at the top, something we don't believe has ever happened before. Furthermore, our runner-up (Poison, with the Minotaur's Lair map) was only one vote behind, so it was almost a four-way tie. The Guild is fast running out of silver compasses!
Congrats to our winners, listed alphabetically by user name below:
The Knights of Camelot by GLS
GLS combined map, illustration and heraldry in his tribute to Arthurian legend. The WIP thread is here.
Lyonesse in the time of King Arthur by Robulous
Robulous also went for an Arthurian theme, choosing to map Lyonesse, "the fabled land lost beneath the seas," in an encyclopedia-style book format. WIP thread.
Baba Yaga's Hut by Voolf
Inspired by Bogie's challenge introduction, Voolf created a beautifully drawn and coloured map of Baby Yaga's forest hut. Here's the WIP.Congrats to all our winners, and thank you to everyone who entered this month.
October/November Lite Challenge: Underworld
Our new challenge has started, and we have an extra incentive to take part this month!
Firstly, the challenge criteria. Bogie says...
Traditionally in RPGs and movies, Underworld refers to realms that lie beneath ours. But that leaves a lot of room for creative interpretation. For this challenge make a map of the Underworld, what ever that means to you... so you could do a cave system, or a whole underground city, or a hollow earth type setting, or the sewer system under a city and what lives down there, or what ever your creative minds come up with.
Not only will our winner get a silver compass this month, there's also a prize on offer. Author Jesper Schmidt has graciously offered a copy of his book "Fantasy Map Making" to the winner. We'd like to thank Mr. Schmidt for his generous offer. Please check out his web site here, his Twitter and his YouTube channel.
Let's see what you can do with this month's theme. General information here and view the current entries here.
