Mostly finished the sword (I can't think of anything else I will do with it right now) with shading and light, and putting it into place behind the shield.

Anything that comes to mind right away that you think could be improved?

Liking this so far! Small suggestion: A wooden Shield would be made out of several smaller Boards, rather than being made out of a single broad one.

The hilt of the sword could be thicker in my opinion, to give it good grip. Maybe don't make it that much thinner at the bottom as this makes it a weak spot and you would have a bad grip on that.

Yeah, when I redo the shield I'm going to do that. As for the sword, I traced it over a real photo of a real sword, so it's actually the proportions of a real sword. It might be a bit out of proportion to the shield however..

I concur with what Nidhöggr said about shield usually being planked and I guess you could thicken the hilt up, but otherwise it's looking really great Josiah.

What are you talking about? It may be a simple design, but this is some great stuff!

Out of interest, what else are you planning to add?

    Thanks GLS!!

I'm planning on redoing the shield (it will have planks), adding two crosses axes (mostly already done), and I'm not sure what else. Oh yeah! I want to see how a viking helmet hanging off one of the axes or something looks. From there I'll see if I want to do anything else.

Worked a bunch on it, got the two axes done, as well as redoing the shield.. It's almost done! Oh no! What am I going to do after it??

Does anyone think the center thing on the shield stands out too much? Any comments or pointers?

Cool idea for the challenge Josiah! I like the sketchy hand drawn look of it. The shield looks fine to me.

Ah, it looks fine now! I want to throw in an additional remark, please excuse my stubborness: Viking swords often are photographed showing only the underlying metal construction of the hilt, without the leather which is wound above, because that is long rotten. Are you really sure, that this was not the case here? I am a nitpicker at times, please forgive me. I do like the rest of your Sketch very much, especially the axes, very vikingy!

PS: The shading of the center thing is great!

Thanks so much for the comments! @Nidhöggr Indeed that was the case, there was no leather and the whole thing was basically black, mostly I just traced the outline and went from there. Very observant of you.

Here's another update, I made the viking helment, not 100% I will keep it, mostly because of placement. I could put it hanging off the top of the sword, but I don't like that because it covers the sword tip. Other options are to put it on the axe, or just in front of the shield.. I don't know, any suggestions.

Here it is on the axe.

And in front of the shield:
