Mar / Apr 2016 Lite Challenge: Sword and Shield Compass Rose

I've never really spent any effort trying to make a decent compass rose before, so this is a good opportunity I think. I am going to try to make a standard sword and shield thing with the sword pointing north. I'm not very good at illustrations (which is what this type is a bit more) in fact I'm pretty poor at illustrations but I thought I'd try anyway.

So here goes... I started out with a graph paper because I find it easier to draw things on real pen and paper, but I will trace it over in photoshop after. Both of the sketches I made somehow failed and end up having the shield way too small, but it's something I will fix.

I also made a test normal compass rose because I wasn't sure what kind I was going to do then. I like it but it's too standard so I think I'm going to stick with the sword and shield.

I like it. It's certainly better than anything I've tried. I think this challenge will be really cool because compasses and scales can be made out of pretty much anything. Great job so far

Yeah a good start Josiah. It's always great to start doing things out by pen and paper even if it's just a sketch, so it will be nice to see where you take this when you do get onto photoshop!

Thank's everyone. I've been sketching a bit on photoshop, I'll try to post an update once I've got something done.

Okay... so worked on the shield a bit. I got a pencil brush for photoshop to give it a bit more of a sketched drawn look. I don't know if this is the final shield I will use, but it may be. Perhaps I will make a few in the end if I have time, we'll see.

Another quick update. I have some time so I've worked on it a bit. I found an image of a viking sword and sort of traced over it, resulting it this:

I'm planning to make it kind of vikingy (it's not even a word! ), with two crossed axes possibly. I also want to redo the shield to make it look for vikingy as well.

I'm still working on it now so I should get some more done.
