Default Mar / April '18 Lite Challenge: Guilded Lands

I thought It'd be time to do another map and what better excuse than the Lite Challenge? This time I've based my land shapes on a real location, I'll see if anyone can work out where

I've made a start and I'll see how things develop from here.

A little bit of progress. I don't know how this is going to end up but I really fancy having a bash at a more monochromey style of map, the main inspiration being some of Diamond's maps. I've put a makeshift frame around for now because it looks a bit 'odd' being all at sea with those straight lines where I'd left space for a frame. I've also added some coastal rings.

    Looks interesting, Straf

Haven't a clue where it is, though.

Thanks Mouse. It's an interesting starting point but there is loads to do. There is far too much repetition in the mountains for my liking. I don't think I've quite got the colours how I like. But when I look at this as my starting point and I look at what I was doing a year ago it's like a million miles apart. I've reached this stage after a few hours, I started the linework for it Tuesday evening in Inkscape. Yes Inkscape. I'm starting to work with that a lot more as I learn its little features. It's a very sophisticated package for the price, i.e. bugger all (except the download costs of course). Although everyone should contribute to free software, even if it's proofreading and correcting documentation

I've imported it into GIMP now to work on.

    Hey Straf,

Good to see you've got the mountains in approximately the right place...

    Most clever of you Tonquani!

Nice try Straf, but these people know their geography. I thought I was clever using the outlines of some remote islands in one of my recent challenges, and they had them pegged in seconds.

Glad to have you on the Challenge Straf!

Ah, it wasn't that clever really, I grew up there so when I looked at it even though it was upside down it looked strangely familiar...

Thanks Bogie. Just don't go expecting anything near last month's standard. I think I peaked

I've been messing about a bit with rivers and I'm trying to put a sort of gold lettering effect onto the map, but I'm not sure I'm getting it quite right.

Hey Straf, looking good. Just a couple of things.

The gold text is nice, but doesn't stand out at all from the sea colour. I would say one or the other needs to change to give slightly more contrast.

The repeating pattern in your mountains is quite obvious, but I assume from your earlier comment that there is still some work to be done on them.

Cheers Tonquani. There is a lot to do with the mountains and the gold text needs to be in a cartouche rather than on the map itself. I'm pottering about with stuff to get the effect I'm looking for. It's all about trying new things in these challenges.

I'm closing down all my graphics applications now though as I'm quite (hic) drunk and so I don't want to destroy anything. Although there's a challenge idea there - a map a drunk cartographer might produce.
