That's a pretty neat-looking effect. Looking forward to see what you do with it
Well, I finally figured out how to make a crumple texture, and I'm experimenting with it. I'll be posting a tutorial on how to do it in GIMP here shortly. I decided to try to create a world map.
The world of Ashmin has a continuous fireline circling it so that growth is burned down every three years or so. That means a continent circling the world. I managed to create such a continent using a crumple map (took some time), but then simply could not figure out how to wrap the left and right edges. So I applied some noise and the "Land and Sea" gradient and left the rest for future development.
Unfortunately a map this size is too much for Wilbur on my computer. (I probably need more memory.) I was hoping to play around with erosion and and basin fills on a world scale, but that will have to wait.
As expected, the crumple map produced a much more realistic texture, but one which still needs a lot of work.
Comments would be appreciated.

I was looking at the textures you produced, and it looked like a stretched out world to me.
so i wondered what it would look like if it was compressed a bit...
here is a small bit of tweaking...
bits are pixelated from being stretched... but it looks interesting to me.
what do you think of these proportions?
Interesting. I agree this way of doing a crumple texture definitely needs some work to use on a world map. I really don't know how to interpret your mods a world map how however. Here's a sinusoidial remapping (at a smaller scale) of my original equirectangular.

Yeah, it still looks strange, but considering this is a world with non-standard physical laws it can still work. Maybe there's an uplift zone at the north pole and a subduction zone in the south? Land gradually moves southward, eroding as it goes. An interesting thought. The world would have almost no metamorphic rocks. Hm. The creator of this stellar system / pocket realm did have a sense of humor and liked to experiment. (Among other things, the system has a cubical world with 8 mountains making the corners, and a world shaped a liked a dragonfly that chases a moon formed like a candle flame and is chased in turn by a moon shaped like a net.) That sort of world would fit right in.

I think i need to read descriptions more carefully before responding.
I did not catch that your continent stretched around the globe... and thus my compression is likely not helpful...
does the land connect up like a ring around the world?

You could copy a portion of each side and put them on the opposite sides and then blend them a bit with brushes and clone tools...
not sure if that will work..
That's a bit beyond my skill level I'm afraid. If anyone else wants to try I'd be happy to supply the gray-scale image for them to work with.
