I don't think he looks too cartoony, but he does look rather cute and cuddly :O

Hehe, it does sort of look like he's waving which lowers the threat level just a tad
The first thing that came to my mind for use as a reference for one of these (if you are interested) is a Rock-em-Sock-em-Robot. Of course I would modify the arms to be more rock-ish. The other thought was 'The Thing' from the Fantastic Four but you are already pretty close to that. You may need to carve in the joints between the rocks on this guy to lessen the marshmellowy look he kind of has. You know, rough him up a bit.

Thanks for the critique.
I've decided to use another view for the bad guys - instead of full view I will only portrait part of the upper body. So I can give the face more emphasis and hopefully bring more wickedness into the creature character.
He reminds me a bit of the Thing from the Fantastic Four

He's in the trash can now. I already made first sketches for five creatures, which loo kmuch better IMO.
Ohhh Sap, this is turning out to be another beauty! I really like the 'cave dwellings' in the mesa!
Thanks, ravells.
Here's a new version with a better 'stoneling'.

Looking good Sapiento! That guy looks much less friendly - well done
Yep, I like the new stoneling much better. The rest of the map is looking awesome. Those cliffs are gorgeous.

I still have to do some refining on the stoneling, but I guess that's the right direction now.
