I like the text. Agreed that the coastal outlines look a bit harsh. Overall I think you nailed a pretty good early colonial map style.
Here's an alternate history map showing a different colonization of eastern North America.
This is an older map, and there's a couple of things I'd do differently if I was doing it today: I should've put a bit of blur on the landmass outlines, and used a glow or other effect around some of the text to make it pop a bit more. Still, I was mostly happy with it.

i like the very old world feel of it. i've looked at more than a couple of those old maps and you captured the essence pretty well. the coasts don't really work for me, but like you said, if you were making it now
