Cool!! I'll defintely have to take a look.
Adobe Exchange has a load of free stuff which might come in handy. These Actions could be useful..
there's some colour schemers which I posted in the colour scheme thread.
but there's also this one that cuts up an image into equal parts for printing. If you're planning to work on a super big map and want to cut it up into easier smaller chunks then this might help. I've not tried it yet, so if anyone does please post back here and let us know how you get on? Cheers
Tile Images
-oh you'll need to register to download anything - its free though.

I'm thinking Tile Images may be just what I need for GoogleEarth.
Now I just need, Add Topography...

I have used this and its totally awesome. Somebody knew exactly what they wanted when making this. It ends up with a multi page PDF that you send to the printer. You can specify overlap and page size etc. Its really good - and I am sure its free too.
Ahh, use Global Mapper and export to World Wind,,,,it can be done, terrain and all, especially as Global Mapper has hf2/hfz import now, and GTS has Hf2/hfz export (if I remember correctly), as does L3DT.
I had the Anduin Vale in World Wind using Monks terrain for awhile, til my computer crashed, and this laptop won't run World Wind.
Global Mapper exports the images into World Wind format with a few clicks, and exporting the terrain as bils into the proper folders to line up right just takes some math. And a few mods to the xml.
If you had the server space and bandwidth you could even serve out the terrain and imagery to anyone who loaded the xml into their World Wind directory.
There are bits of rumour that Terrain import into World Wind will be easier with the next version.

SeerBlue is me, but more importantly the Four Happy Carpet Orcs +2 (FHCO +2) are Lizzy (BumbleMouse, 16), Race (Raith Eliathy, 11), Roy (Ol' Horsehair, 9), and Lena Marie (Lemur, 6) Kimi (Whurm,2), and Sachiko (MoMo,1)

I looked for GIMP, and the only plugins currently available require guides to be placed, then cut along the guides....or go nuts (like perl-o-tine) and generate all the html to place the cut bits in a file
Would a version of this for GIMP be handy - a simple script to export a regular array of sub-images to a specified directory?

Probably for some people but the normal requirement is to be able to do it for a very large image so that you can print them on multiple sheets of paper. I.e. the process needs to keep an eye on its RAM usage.
Here is the help file for image magick with its cropping which can cut a set of tiles out of an image into multiple files.

Whenever I use IM I really like it, its capable and works but its often slow and not very RAM efficient so I don't know if this can handle big images.

I didn't know that. The clever thing about many of the special programs to do it tho is that you can set some overlap so that when you have all the sheets of paper you can cut them roughly in the overlap region, match them up and sticky tape them together. To do that with Paint means some super accurate cutting against a white edge. Of course no overlap is exactly what you do want for tiles in a google maps type thing except I don't reckon you can get Paint to give you that as an output without printing them.
