I tried it for fun, and here's what I get tweaked to Choke 20% and size 81 (other settings the same)
I understand that Gimp is similar to photoshop in a lot of ways, hopefully layer effects is one of them, and this translates across...
I think, therefore I am a nerd.
Cogito, ergo sum nerdem.

Pimping my worldmap here. Still WIP... long way to go, but I'm pretty proud of what I've done so far...
And the steps I used here were-
butn.jpg
(optional...)
- Select the map area (non-white)
- shrink the area
- create a new layer mask from the selection
- Filters>Artistic>Cubism on the mask to make a more chewed up edge
- Threshold the mask
(...up to this point)
- Create a new layer, filled with black set to burn mode
- Add a layer mask same as the map but inverted.
- Filter>Generic>Dialate the mask a number of times to increase the burn width
- Blur the mask
- play with the curves of the mask to get the look you want.
I also added a drop shadow.

Thank you all for these comments! The help with the burnt edges is particularly helpful, and your comments about mountains led me to a really great mountain tutorial on the site here! This was so useful! Next time I make a map in this style, I think I'll feel a bit more confident in the mountains and edges. And next time I'll do a WIP thread like I'm supposed to!
Anyway, thanks again!
