Post *** June Challenge - Build Something for the CWBP ***

It gives me great pleasure to announce the theme for the Cartographer’s Guild challenge for the month of June. The fact that I’m doing this announcement should have given you a clue. You guessed it, it’s the CWBP. If you don’t know what that is, where have you been? It stands for Collaborative World Building Project. Many of you are already involved in this project which has, as its aim, the creation by collaborative process, of our own, fantasy campaign world complete with maps and background info and everything else.

    The challenge

You must create a map of a settlement or structure that fits thematically and geographically with the work already done on the project. It does not have to follow any style used in the project. You are welcome to map in whatever style suits you and that you are most comfortable with.

But……..You have to map one of the following things.

    A walled town or city
An area of wilds approximately 20 miles across
A trading town next to a river
    A coastal port
A stretch of road approximately 50 miles long
    A ruin
    An underground lair or mine

What you will need to do

You will need to have a look through the wiki (found here) and browse Seerblue’s very cool Google maps of the project found here. Find a spot that you like, either from what you see on the map or from what you have read about in the wiki, and go for it. Feel free to ask any questions on the CWBP forum that you may have as to the area of your choice or any other contextual information.

Areas will be dealt with on a first come first served basis. In other words if you choose to map a specific place, that place cannot be chosen by another mapper. Voting should be based primarily on artistic and mapping criteria and “coolness” factor, as well as how well the map fits with the areas already done in the CWBP and any relevant written content..

There are no prizes this month, but think of the fame, the adulation, and how fun you will be at parties from now on if you can say, “Yes, I’m in the project, what about it?”"

I was planning on working on the Nosferatu town north of Calishem on my Qashya Mal (western reaches) map. I was planning on doing this anyway, but since this challenge came up first - I will make it the challenge.

Walled town on a small mountain river (at a fork of two rivers), upland environs and perhaps the bloodstone mines just to its north as well.

I want to try a hand-drawn style using Torstan's technique with dodging and burning - that is hand-drawn/3D terrain effect (really quite cool!) Of course I don't use a tablet, so I'll do it slightly different. But this is my goal.

Arkkeeper calls Arkender, Capital City of Groam, To be done as an in-world style map, hand drawn. Specifically the City itself, the surrounding sprawl-slums and land within at most 15 miles of it which makes up the entire Arkender County.

So I could map out the ruins of Fort Mere or the cave lair of some evil cultists on Hardy Island, both of which are locations on the Thumberton Island? Well, the cave lair isn't listed, but Hardy Island is.

Helium3 mapping Hardy Island would be great. That swamp is infested with Lizard Men who attack everyone in the swamp area. Death Chaser Fen is a real killing zone - a suicidal place to go. Theres a band of maybe 40 or so high level warriors like Vikings officially called "The Hard Ones" but more colloquially known as "The Hard Bast***ds" with a leader named Crazy Krull. The whole group are totally awesome Lizard Men killing machines that go completely berserk and pathologically violent in battle. Krull has a Lizard man headress and likes to taunt them before wading in. Nobody knows where they live but they meet merchants at Hardy Point or Hawker Point and escort them across the water for a large fee using several long ship ferries cutting out the long way around - right the way around via New Mere Fort to Mullion and northwards. Its assumed that they live on Hardy Island but nobody knows or goes there to find out.

I have a write up about Krull which I had better get around to uploading. My machine has been down but its up and limping now. I was due to give a demo of the VTT with a whole list of things to cover. I'll make sure I add a flyover of the island & Fort Mere.

Fort Mere is the old fort now in ruin. It used to protect the road running from Morton to Mullion but the water appears to be slowly rising in the swampland and the road got worse and worse until it was barely passable. This made it open to attack and people were being hit hard every time they went across it. The troops pulled back and let the Fort go defending it further south and building a new road just past Little Mere Fen which is also pretty dangerous but not as bad as before. Old Mere Fort and the whole area around that is pretty much a no go zone unless your up to a lot of chopping. It might have been taken over by Lizard Men by now... thats all very open ended.

Although Lizard men predominate, you could have any other marsh dwellers in there also. Maybe even a green dragon. Theres probably one in there somewhere.

I'll be doing the usual WIP thumbnail page. I have the script still - it survived the resurrection. If you could put...

    ### Latest WIP ###

at the end of your post for each time you want to make the next image attachment the thumb then it helps a lot.

Toff, I have a tutorial inwork for putting the maps into gmaps, but it is Global Mapper orientated, as that is what I use to tile the imagery. If you just want a quick way to put a map into google maps, GMapUploader is dead easy, upload your image (16384x16384 pixels Max) and the site will process it and then give you a link to your new map. Connection speed needs to be pretty good for real large images. The link on the bottom of your map page will show a full screen image.
    The page is pretty basic,
but you can get a google page and tweak the html to get something like this

If you view source on the misty mts page you can see that all that is really necessary to get a gmap into google pages is a key for the page and the js, which I copied from the js/html of the page made by gmap uploader and pasted into the google page while in html edit mode.
