Pretty much any projection has that problem. It is possible to do an equidistant projection between up to two points and all other points on the map, but not a generally correct-scaled map. Assuming the planet is spherical. This is fantasy cartography after all.

On a Plate Caree map, scale will be correct N/S and along the equator. Now when it comes to the question of what projection is being used and where exactly the equator is, that's a problem most maps on this site fail to address. Including almost all of mine. Seems a little hard on LWD to isolate him out for criticism.
